Florida Fruiting Vegetable Crop Growers Welcome Major Nematicide Advancement

Control plant-parasitic nematodes with Salibro® nematicide with Reklemel™ active and harvest healthier fruiting vegetables.

Their pictures are not on wanted posters in any state post offices, but plant-parasitic nematodes are stealing yield and quality from specialty crop growers in Florida and other states every year. Once hatched, juvenile nematodes begin searching for a new host plant where they latch on to healthy roots and begin their thievery.

Despite their short life span, if left untreated, nematode populations can escalate, reaching economic threshold levels quickly and, just as quickly, get out of hand. Thankfully, controlling plant-parasitic nematodes in all crops where they are an invasive pest threat just got easier.

A healthy and vigorous pepper plant rooting system (right) compared to the damaged rooting system of an untreated pepper plant (left) with severe galling from plant-parasitic nematodes illustrates the effectiveness of Salibro® nematicide with Reklemel™ active to protect fruiting vegetables and other specialty crops.

“We are pleased to bring to the market a unique mode-of-action crop solution that provides superior protection of fruiting vegetables and other specialty crops from plant-parasitic nematodes,” explains Natalie Holt, U.S. marketing product manager, Specialty Crops, Corteva Agriscience. “We have completed most of the U.S. state registrations, including Florida, and encourage specialty crop growers to add Salibro nematicide with Reklemel active to their nematode control programs.”

Salibro® nematicide with Reklemel™ active offers growers tremendous flexibility when it comes to the method and timing of application. Depending on the crop, it can be applied at planting in-furrow, broadcast or through drip chemigation. That flexibility can be extended because growers also have the option of making an application through drip chemigation in-season.

“The mode of action for Reklemel active acts quickly, effectively and only targets plant-parasitic nematodes such as root-knot nematodes,” Holt says. “As more farmers are recognizing the many benefits of good soil health, Salibro nematicide controls harmful nematodes that reduce a plant’s health without disrupting the healthy balance of beneficial organisms in the soil.”

Salibro nematicide stays in the root zone for extended residual protection, is a major advancement in nonfumigant nematode control and reduces the overall environmental impact compared with other nematicides. It should be an integral part of any Integrated Pest Management strategy or program.

Reklemel active is one of the first new active ingredients registered under the U.S. EPA policy that incorporates Endangered Species Act assessments into the registration process for new pesticides.

“Because Salibro nematicide is very selective in what it controls, many growers are taking an overall program approach to their pest management efforts and strengthening that effort by adding Salibro nematicide with Vydate® L insecticide/nematicide, which delivers systemic foliar control,” Holt says.

Every few years, powerful trade winds and warming tropical ocean waters spawn thunderstorms associated with global weather phenomenon El Nino. On the opposite side of the cycle is another weather phenomenon called La Nina, which increases the chances of drier and warmer winters.
