Suterra Releases Navel Orangeworm (NOW) BioLure

Suterra announces the global launch of NOW BioLure, a pheromone-based monitoring tool for Navel Orangeworm (NOW, Amyelois transitella). Suterra developed the NOW BioLure in response to market demands for an effective and time-efficient monitoring tool for NOW, as well as to support mating disruption approaches that utilize Suterra’s NOW puffer technology.

The NOW BioLure is a multi-component pheromone blend released through a membrane-based lure and typically used in conjunction with a large plastic delta trap.

Traditionally, growers rely on egg traps containing almond or pistachio meal to evaluate NOW flight based on the presence or quantity of eggs on the trap. However, these traps are labor intensive to assemble and monitor.

The easy to use NOW BioLure provides significant benefits compared to alternative monitoring tools. It uses a powerful attractant for male NOW that remains active for a long duration in the field, and NOW flights can be easily and reliably tracked even after hull split or after harvest. Research has shown the NOW BioLure retains its efficacy for up to six weeks under normal conditions in almond orchards. The NOW BioLure can provide effective male monitoring for as little as $1/acre per season in typical trap densities found in California nut orchards.

NOW BioLure is the result of a research effort driven by Suterra’s Tom Larsen in conjunction with Brad Higbee, research entomologist at Paramount Farming. Collaborators also include the University of California and USDA.

NOW BioLure is one of over a dozen new products being tested or made commercially available by Suterra in 2013, involving active field testing across five continents. The company has over 160 registrations worldwide and invests several million dollars per year in research on active ingredient chemistry, product development, and field trials.
