California Pistachio Growers Betting On China

California pistachio growers are hoping for more than just a potential market in China. The Sacramento Bee reports that production of the nut in the state of California will reach around a billion pounds by 2020. Growers are banking on China’s expanding urban middle class and their interest in the crop.

What helps the export market is the sanctions and civil unrest in Iran and Syria.

Now in an excess of 80 million pounds, the U.S. pistachio export to China a decade ago was just 1 million pounds.
