World’s Processing Tomato Crop Estimate Lowered

The World Processed Tomato Council released its latest estimate of 35.14 mm metric tons for the 2013 world crop. This estimate is 632,000 metric tons lower than the February estimate.

The two significant changes from the last estimate are in Italy and Turkey. Both countries reduced the estimate by 300,000 metric tons. Heavy rainfall in Italy will push back the start of planting. In Turkey, growers have options to plant other crops, therefore, it is predicted that not as many tomatoes will be planted.
