We are deeply saddened by the passing of Gary Bernard Mount of Terhune Orchards in Princeton, NJ, who died peacefully on Dec. 29, 2025, after a courageous battle with glioblastoma, per the Terhune Orchards website.
Gary’s passion for farming and his relentless pursuit of knowledge guided him to the top of his industry. In 2005, American Fruit Grower proudly honored him as Apple Grower of the Year, recognizing his excellence not just in production but in innovation, direct marketing, and leadership among growers of all sizes.
Though based in a state not known for large-scale apple production, Gary distinguished himself by constantly seeking better ways to grow and sell fruit. He embraced new technologies, experimented with orchard systems, and never missed an opportunity to learn, attending industry meetings both locally and internationally and sharing insights with peers.
His leadership extended beyond the orchard. Gary was deeply involved with the International Fruit Tree Association for decades and served on its board and research committees, helping advance rootstock and integrated pest management knowledge for growers everywhere.
At Terhune Orchards, a family farm he and his wife Pam grew into a beloved regional institution, Gary’s commitment to community, stewardship of the land, and mentorship to younger growers embodied the very spirit of American agriculture.
We extend our sincere condolences to his wife Pam, their children and grandchildren, and the entire Terhune Orchards family. His legacy of innovation, generosity, and love for the craft of growing will continue to inspire generations of growers.
