Now Is the Time To Put Your Favorite Apple Grower in the Spotlight

Now that I’ve re-entered procrastination detox (a monthly occurrence for me) and am getting around to writing this column, I’m going to ask you (only somewhat disingenuously) to: Let’s get a move on; Pick up the pace; Shake a leg; Step on it … At stake, with little time to spare, is your nomination for the 2022 American Fruit GrowerSM Apple Grower of the Year Award.

For the record, the deadline to nominate is May 20. So, if your mail carrier was on his or her game while delivering this issue, you’ve got, at best, around three weeks to Git-R-Done. Plenty of time, right?

If you’ve never submitted a nomination, here’s how it works:

Who are we honoring? The award, which is sponsored by Valent USA, recognizes apple growers who have reached outstanding levels of success through their innovative efforts in production, marketing, and management practices. Winners demonstrate commitment and leadership in their field by producing high-quality fruit, being actively involved in associations, and taking a strong role in shaping the direction of the apple industry.

How long have we been doing this? This is our 34th year. We’ve presented the award every year since 1989, when we honored John Rice of Pennsylvania for leading the fight against spurious claims — later proven to completely misplaced — about a growth regulator, Alar. The reigning honoree is the Hardy family — Chip, Trevor, and Tyler — from Brookdale Fruit Farm in Hollis, NH. Check all the winners out in the slideshow above.

Who is eligible? There are few restrictions. Every professional apple grower in the U.S. is eligible — except the previous 33 winners. Last year a total of 16 states were represented.

When is the winner announced? We unveil the recipient on or about Aug. 1. He or she (or they) will be photographed and profiled for the cover of our August issue. The award will then be formally presented Aug. 18 at the USApple Outlook 2022 Conference at the Ritz-Carlton in Chicago.

How much work does nominating involve? In addition to specifics, such as names, locations, and contact information, we request reasons for nomination. Some responses are short and sweet — fewer than 50 words. Others exceed 500 words.

What raises our eyebrows? Whether your list of reasons is long or short, we’re looking for a difference-maker. We want to know what makes your favorite apple grower unique.

What do you get for nominating? For the first time, we are rewarding nominators with an “I Am an American Fruit Grower” bumper sticker. For more information on the new program, click here.

Hopefully, that’s enough incentive to push you to nominate a grower for the 2022 Apple Grower of the Year award and beat our May 20 deadline. To paraphrase one of those cool quotable quotes, “A month from now, you may wish you had started today.”
