Duarte Nursery Breaks Ground On Expansion

Duarte Nursery has begun the first phase of a two-year, 20-acre expansion project that will increase their total production capacity by 50%. The extra space is necessary because the central California nursery’s sales have grown more than four fold in less than a decade. This expansion will help them meet customer demand for their “Clean Plant” products.

“Growers are enjoying great advantages from our certified, clonal and containerized trees and vines,” said John Duarte, President of Duarte Nursery, Inc. “The result is record demand and we want to keep up.”

The new greenhouse will have passive ventilation and automated shading for reduced energy use. A new rolling bench design is economic, easy to clean, and integrates a low cost heat delivery solution. Mechanical parts for the vents and fans were chosen for efficiency, reliability, and simplicity. Jim Duarte, founder of Duarte Nursery, has more than 40 years in the nursery business. This is the seventh generation of greenhouses that he has built. Jim and his sons, John and Jeff, have teamed up with another family, Tom and Dean Conley from Conley Greenhouses, to design a high performing and cost effective solution.

“The houses will give us excellent environmental control, enormous additional capacity, reduced cost of operation, flexibility across our crops, and they should last for decades,” says Jim Duarte.

Duarte Nursery, Inc. is a family owned and operated nursery located near Modesto. It is the largest permanent crops nursery in the U.S., built with what they term a history of aggressively marketing innovative products. Their full list of products includes grapevines, almond, walnut, pistachio rootstock, stone fruit, citrus, cherry, pomegranates, berries, and olives.
