Understand Blossom End Rot

One of the most common tomato afflictions is blossom-end rot. It got its name for the black, leathery scar located on the blossom end of the fruit. This disorder most frequently occurs when there are extremes in soil moisture.

The uneven levels of moisture can lead to a calcium deficiency in developing tomatoes. Maintaining an even level of moisture with irrigation and mulching will help prevent this disorder. In addition, growers should apply the correct amount of fertilizer.

An updated blossom end rot publication is available from the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, ANR-1059, “Horticulture Notes: Blossom-End Rot in Tomatoes.” For more information and to purchase a copy, click here
