‘Godfather’ of the Citrus Box Tax in Florida Passes Away

Norman Todd put his mark on the Florida citrus industry over many years. He passed away recently at the age of 88.

Norman Todd, a Florida citrus champion and industry influencer, passed away on Feb. 28, 2021. He was 88.

Todd’s citrus career was prolific. He managed thousands of acres of citrus in more than 20 Florida counties and was involved in numerous research committees and production programs. He led a statewide referendum among citrus growers to establish the citrus box tax. He was known as the ‘Godfather’ of the box tax, which has raised millions of dollars for UF/IFAS research stations.

He was a long-time member of the Florida State Horticultural Society and served four years as Treasurer.

Todd’s industry accomplishments earned him many honors over the years, some include the UF/IFAS Alumnus of Distinction, Florida Grower’s Citrus Achievement Award, Distinguished Service Award of Merit, Outstanding Agriculturist, and Outstanding Commercial Horticulturist. In addition, he is a member of the Florida Citrus Hall of Fame.

Before getting into the citrus business, he graduated from the University of Florida and then served in the Army performing missions in Alaska. While serving, he met Helen Kennedy. They married and settled in Florida.

Norman is survived by his son David (Judy), his daughter Patricia (Michael), his friend Marilee Truitt, his caregiver Heidi Weems, and three grandchildren.

A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, Todd requested that folks donate their time and treasure to their favorite charity.
