Scamming 101 Lesson: What Produce Growers Should Watch For

Scams are everywhere! Today’s technology and ease of communication can make spotting these cloaked schemes extremely difficult. Recently, one produce growing operation was scammed out of two shipments of onions. Yes, the phishing scam was to abscond with onions! It can happen to anybody. So that’s why Shay Myers, CEO of Owyhee Produce in Parma, ID, wanted to share his story.

Myers is not only a grower, but also is an influencer on social media. He used LinkedIn to help spread the word about a phishing scam that recently impacted his operation. It all started with an email that looked legit with a link to a website that mirrored a major food distributor. The scam even involved having Myers and his operation perform the entire food safety process.

While time, resources, and product were lost, it could have been much worse. Myers doesn’t want the same thing to happen to anyone else. Check out his “Scamming 101” lesson learned video clip below.
