NPR reports nearly 15% of the nation’s bees were in the direct path of the major storm. Many of the hives were recently shipped to the Sunshine State by beekeepers from the North and East U.S. in preparation for fall and winter months. Timing couldn’t have been worse for this regular practice as the hurricane tore a path right over where many hives were situated.

Several beekeepers in Florida were interviewed for a recent episode of NPR’s “All Things Considered.” Check out the clip to get a firsthand perspective of the situation.
