Imported Cucumbers Connected With Multistate Outbreak Of Salmonella

In September the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported a Salmonella poona outbreak linked to cucumbers. During that month, more than 300 people had been infected and two deaths had occurred.

As of Jan. 21, 2016, however, a total of 888 people infected with the outbreak strains of Salmonella poona have been reported from 39 states. The CDC also reported two more people died as a result of eating the tainted produce, bring the total number to six.

According to investigations, the CDC reports cucumbers from Mexico that were distributed by Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce are noted as a likely source of the infections.

The CDC also posted on its website: “The number of reported illnesses has declined substantially since the peak of illnesses in August and September; however, it has not returned to the number of reported illnesses that we would expect to see (about one every month during this time of year). The investigation into the source of these recent illnesses is ongoing.”
