Southeastern Apple Growers Meeting Set For January

The 2014 Southeastern Apple Growers Meeting, sponsored by North Carolina Apple Growers Association, Inc., is set for Jan. 14-15, at the Crowne Plaza Resort in Asheville, NC.

In addition to the two days of educational programs, commercial exhibitors, and entertaining banquet, is the opportunity to meet with other growers. The educational session will begin on, Jan. 14 and conclude on Jan. 15, with the exhibits open both days. The annual banquet will be held on Jan. 14.

This year’s educational program includes speakers with a wide range of expertise. The first day of the program will have an emphasis on marketing, food safety, regulatory issues, and labor management. Keith Yoder from Virginia Tech University, stationed at the Virginia Tech Ag. Research and Extension Center in Winchester, VA, will provide insight on managing Glomerella as well as other disease management strategies.

In addition, topics include orchard management, plant growth regulator use, rootstock performance in the Southeast, pollination, weed and insect management, and what planting systems are viable in the Southeast.

Pesticide recertification credit will be available at the end of the program on Jan. 15.
