Spray Technology Advances Can Cut Costs, Improve Coverage

Sprayers from Electrostatic Spraying Systems provide excellent plant coverage, resulting in cost savings for growers. Testing done by four universities compared Electrostatic Spraying Systems’ (ESS) spray technology with conventional and air-blast sprayers. According to the company, the test results showed the ESS units had 300% better spray penetration and coverage onto hidden areas of dense foliage. These studies also showed that only 15% to
20% of the spray from a conventional or air-blast sprayer ends up on the plants.
Because the ESS sprayers provide better coverage on plants, growers can use some very low chemical rates, resulting in a fast investment payback. According to the company, in one year a 275-acre specialty lettuce farm saved 602 gallons of spray for a savings of $35,599 in chemicals.
In addition, ESS sprayers require 10 to 25 times less water carrier than standard units. This is possible because of the uniform droplet size and improved coverage. An ESS sprayer applies about 6 to 12 gallons per acre.
